What a place , they really care about their horses . Friendly people very knowledgeable who really help you to learn how to properly ride a horse and communicate with them by bonding and not just jumping straight into it. My family and I had a wonderful experience with the Lighthorse Adventure team and their beautiful horses. We were a group of seven, and despite the windy and wet weather, we were so excited to get out there—and we had the best time! The team had thought of everything, from providing jackets and boots to creating a lovely, comfortable area where we could relax and take in the incredible views while they prepared our horses. We loved learning how to connect and communicate with our horses, as well as hearing about the surrounding land and the different filming locations along the way. Our group included riders with a range of experience, from those who had ridden many times to others getting on a horse for the very first time. Everyone felt comfortable, supported and able to enjoy the experience. It was unanimously voted one of the best activities of our entire trip! We would happily recommend Lighthorse Adventures to anyone travelling to New Zealand. Thank you again to the entire team. We hope to see you and your wonderful horses again in the future!Posted on Google![]()

We made an error with our booking and Freyja and the team were incredibly understanding and helpful in getting it sorted for us. They went above and beyond and showed such genuine kindness throughout the whole situation. We’ve absolutely fallen in love with New Zealand and this experience just topped it off. It’s easy to see why Light Horse Adventures is so highly reviewed. Thank you again Freyja we really appreciated everything.Posted on Google![]()

This was truly an unforgettable and amazing experience! The scenery we saw of Glenorchy on horseback was absolutely incredible. The guides were so calm, patient and reassuring, especially with me being a first-time rider. They made me feel so comfortable and made my first horse-riding experience one I’ll never forget. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone and everyone!Posted on Google![]()

Ride. Watch. Discover.
& Help Us Monitor Our Birds
Your ride becomes part of the science
This is more than a birdwatching ride. Your booking helps make a real, long-term bird survey possible.
Standardised observations
During the trek, we’ll take time to observe and record the birds we encounter, including a 5-minute standardised bird count. Where appropriate, we may also look for nests and monitor known nests over the breeding season, returning week after week to record their progress and breeding success.
A Deeper understanding
The information collected during these rides will build a long-term dataset, with observations gathered year after year. Over time, this can help us understand which species are present, how their numbers and distribution change, and how successfully they are breeding.
A valuable contribution
By joining us, you aren’t just coming along for a unique horse trek — you’re helping contribute to a growing record of the birds living in this landscape.
Species we Aim to see
Five species breed on these braided riverbeds and nowhere else in such numbers. The Dart river region is part of a conservation effort most visitors never get close to.
These are the birds we’re watching for — this is a wild, working braided river, not an aviary, so sightings aren’t guaranteed. What is certain is the chance: your guide tracks nesting activity through the season, and every sighting you log becomes part of a real dataset feeding back into local conservation work.
What the day
looks like
A guided horseback trek through the Dart’s braided riverbeds in the endevor to observe five rare nesting bird species, plus a wider range of birds that call the area home.
9:30am – Arrival & briefing
We start with a short talk on the five endemic species nesting on the Dart, and how reading a bird’s body language isn’t so different from reading a horse’s. Both are telling you, constantly, whether you’re too close.
Morning – In the saddle
Walk and trot, with a real focus on standing still and quiet. The horses are chosen for exactly this temperament. You’ll practise riding in line, turning, and holding position as a group before we head out, so the horses are settled and predictable once we’re near the nesting birds.
Midday – Nourishing Lunch
We find a cosy spot nestled in the landscape. Horses resting nearby, you with your binoculars and a booklet observing.
Afternoon – Further observation
Weather and access permitting, we move on toward areas where passerines are more active, continuing to log sightings as we go.
3:30pm – Trek ends

Endemic species We Hope To see

Black-fronted tern (tarapirohe)
Nationally Endangered. Breeds only on braided riverbeds of the eastern and southern South Island, nesting in colonies of 2 to 50 pairs on bare shingle away from vegetation. Laying runs October to December, sometimes into January, with 25-day shared incubation. The single biggest threat is predation by rats, stoats, ferrets, feral cats, and hedgehogs, with southern black-backed gulls and swamp harriers also taking eggs and chicks on some rivers. Guide hook: watch for the buoyant, hovering flight and the sharp orange bill in breeding plumage — they’ll dip to the surface to snatch mayfly nymphs, or plunge for small fish.

Banded dotterel (tūturiwhatu)
Declining. The most common small plover of New Zealand riverbeds, identified by a chestnut breast band in breeding males (duller in females) and a run-stop-peck foraging style. First eggs are laid August to early November in a bare scrape lined with tiny stones; incubation takes about 4 weeks with chicks fledging 5-6 weeks later. Feral cats, mustelids, rats and hedgehogs are the main predators of eggs, chicks and adults. Good behavioural note for the “keeping distance” talk: a distraction “broken-wing” display is used to lure threats away from the nest — worth flagging so guests don’t mistake it for an injured bird and approach.

Wrybill (ngutuparore)
Nationally Increasing — the only good-news status of the five, and the only bird in the world with a bill that curves sideways, always to the right, used to reach insect larvae under riverbed stones. This one is the local flagship: the species breeds almost entirely in Canterbury, but the Dart is one of only four small Otago populations, alongside the Hunter, Makarora and Matukituki Rivers. Clutches of 2 are laid from September or October, with a long 30-36 day incubation and fledging at 35-40 days. Wrybills are unusually approachable and rely on camouflage rather than flight, so a slow, quiet horseback approach suits them better than most viewing methods.

Black-billed gull
At Risk / Declining, found only in New Zealand. Colonies form on sparsely-vegetated riverbed gravels; a national census found the population has declined over 80% in Southland in 30 years, with a predicted further 70% decline across Canterbury, Otago and Southland over the next 30. Colonies establish in August-September and disperse December to February. Nesting on river islands rather than banks gives noticeably better survival, since mammalian predators can’t reach as easily — a good one for explaining why the Dart’s channel structure matters. Guests were already spotted here: a Queenstown sighting appears among the species’ own reference images.

South Island pied oystercatcher (tōrea)
Declining, but the most abundant oystercatcher in New Zealand — striking black-and-white plumage, long red bill, thick pink legs. Most of the population breeds inland on South Island riverbeds and farmland, moving to the coast after breeding. Nests are simple unlined scrapes on raised gravel with clear sightlines all around, and pairs often keep the same partner and return to the same territory year after year. This is your easiest-to-spot bird for a first-timer — loud piping calls carry a long way when a pair is defending territory.
Other species you
are likely to see
Alongside them, you’ll likely cross paths with birds that call the valley home year-round. Across the Dart and Rees wetlands, we see the Paradise Shelduck (pūtangitangi), Black Swan, New Zealand Pipit, White Face Heron, multiple species of Shag, The hauk or harvest and if your are really lucky; New Zealand Falcon. It is also not unusual to see Pukeko or white heron passing through. As well as other introduced species featured below.
Why Birdwatching from Horseback?
Access you can’t get on foot. Horseback lets us reach parts of the braided river system without disturbing the birds or the ground they nest on. The birds see you as part of the natural world on horseback.
A non-invasive approach. The same principle behind loose-rein natural horsemanship riding applies to how we move around nesting birds: distance, patience, and reading behaviour instead of forcing an outcome.
Part of something bigger. A portion of every booking goes back into protecting the Dart River, and your sightings contribute to season-long data shared with the The Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust.
