An International Dark Sky Sanctuary
— One of Only 23 in the World

In February 2025, Tāhuna/Glenorchy achieved International Dark Sky Sanctuary status — one of only 23 designated sanctuaries on the planet, and one of just four in New Zealand.

DARKSKY Sanctuary Area

The designation is the most remote and fragile category in the International Dark Sky Places programme, administered by the International Dark Skies Association. It recognises places where the quality of the night sky is exceptional — and where active protection ensures it stays that way.

The Tāhuna/Glenorchy Sanctuary covers over 200,000 hectares, following the catchments of Te Awa Whakatipu/Dart River and Puahere/Rees River — the same rivers our horses walk beside. It encompasses eight high country stations and stretches deep into Mt Aspiring National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The Routeburn, Rees-Dart, and Greenstone Caples tracks all fall within its boundary.

Lighthorse Adventures operates at the gateway to this sanctuary. On our Stargazing Trek, we saddle up for an unforgettable evening ride and journey into Glenorchy’s newly designated Dark Sky Sanctuary area on horseback.

The area currently excludes the areas around both Glenorchy and Kinloch. The Sanctuary surrounds the townships of Glenorchy and Kinloch and in the coming year, they will be brought into the Dark Sky Places program as a Dark Sky Community in an approach similar to Kaikoura.

Why the Darkness Matters

Globally, 80% of people can no longer see a natural night sky. Light pollution doesn’t just obscure stars — it disrupts wildlife, sleep cycles, and the cultural thread that connects people to the sky above them.
Here in Glenorchy, darkness is actively conserved for several reasons:

Wildlife. Long-tailed bats/pekapeka are thriving here after two decades of protection and trapping. Lesser short-tailed bats have been recorded in the Routeburn. Glow worms, night moths, and native invertebrates depend on natural darkness to feed and reproduce. An aging tūna/eel population lives in the Head of the Lake waterways.

Astronomy. Glenorchy sits on the 45th parallel south — one of the world’s prime observation latitudes. In 2028, it will be one of the few places on Earth to witness a Total Solar Eclipse.

Culture. Matariki — the Māori New Year, marked by the rising of the Pleiades — is observed here each winter with community gatherings. The stars are not a backdrop. They are a calendar, a compass, a whakapapa.

This evening horseback trek rides out into the Dart River valley — into the heart of the Tāhuna/Glenorchy Dark Sky Sanctuary — combining the timeless connection between horse and rider with the awe-inspiring spectacle of the southern night sky.

Under the guidance of our experienced team, you’ll pause to witness celestial wonders rarely seen in our modern world: the Matariki cluster, the Magellanic Clouds, the Southern Cross, and thousands of stars that emerge with crystalline clarity once the last of the twilight fades.

The Aurora Australis — te kāhui o Matariki — is visible from this latitude far more often than most visitors expect. No guarantees, but when she appears, she does not disappoint.
The rhythm of hooves on mountain trail. The smell of cold air off the ranges. The quiet companionship of a horse who has walked this country many times before. And above all — a sky so full of light it takes a moment to understand what you’re looking at.

Eco-tourism is not a marketing term for us — it’s an operating principle, and it starts with how we treat our horses.

Lighthorse Adventures is owned and operated by a Licensed Parelli Professional. Parelli Natural Horsemanship is built on Love, Language, and Leadership — a philosophy that treats the horse as a thinking, feeling partner rather than a tool. We communicate through energy, body language, and feel. We put down ego and the need for control, and we meet horses on their terms.

In practice, that means hoof boots instead of horseshoes so hooves expand naturally and our horses move freely on the rocky riverbeds of the Dart Valley. Bitless bridles and loose-rein riding — no tight contact, no domination. Western saddles built on technology that allows the horse’s shoulders and back to move without restriction. We cycle and rest our herd without over-riding them. And we breed our own horses here in the valley, raised with care and named with love. The horse teaches us to be present, to read the land, and to tread lightly. Protecting the landscape — above and below — follows naturally from that.
